Managing a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, tiredness and general discomfort is a challenge that even the world’s best athletes cannot conquer. Use of an antihistamine with a decongestant can also help but watch out for side effects like sedation and dryness of the eyes, nose and mouth. Generally, a cough is self-limited and should not need any medication. Nasal decongestants should be used for only two-three days since overuse leads to paradoxical increase in nasal congestion.

Zinc has shown some benefit in decreasing the duration of symptoms and severity but some preparations can cause permanent loss of smell. A lot of research in other medications is ongoing such as interferon and other herbal products. Multiple other prevention strategies have been tested and among other things, exercise as well as gargling with water may decrease cold symptoms.

Washing your hands regularly, reducing stress, consuming more and more vegetables & fruits, taking good sleep and complete bed rest is one of the best treatments for common cold. Anyway taking rest will be much useful in maintaining a healthy immune systems and also much more essential for being and healthy. We should take care of our body seriously otherwise it would be much difficult to getting rid of common cold symptoms.

Although, it is not a serious health problem but it is very painful. It can cause pain when swallowing or talking. Fortunately there are some natural and effective home remedies available that help relieve common cold infection quickly.

Home Remedies for Common Cold:

Holy Basil and Pepper:

Take a handful of Holy Basil (Tulasi) leaves and 10 black peppercorns. Mix both ingredients, grind them together and consume thrice a day. This preparation relieves cough and cold.


Thick-Leaf Lavender and Peppercorns:

Take 7 thick-leaf lavender leaves and 10 black peppercorns. Mix both ingredients, grind them together and consume thrice a day. This preparation relieves cough and cold.


Ginger and Honey:

Take 4 teaspoon of ginger juice, add 4 teaspoon of honey and 2 teaspoon of lemon juice with half cup of water mix all the ingredients and consume regularly.


Gargle:

Gargling with salt water is considered one of the best cures for cold and cough. Where the mucous cells of the throat may have been swelling, therefore, Gargling with salt and warm water works on diluted and relief the pain. Take a glass of warm water and half a teaspoon of salt, mix it and gargle with it not more than three times a day.


Honey:

Honey has been one of the cures for common cold for a long time and has proven its effectiveness in the treatment of cough, as it contains anti-bacterial properties, and its ability to extract water of inflamed tissue. Mix one teaspoon of organic honey in a cup of hot water, consume several times a day.


Marshmallow: Marshmallow roots have been used treating cold and cough for a long time. It is useful treatment of sore throat. Add one tsp of the roots to one cup of boiling water and soaked them for 30 minutes. Consume this drink 2 to 3 times a day.


Garlic: Although garlic’s taste and smell has a huge effectiveness as an antibiotic killer of bacteria, which is useful for all kinds of infections, including common cold. Simply put a piece of garlic in your mouth and suck its juice.


Ginger Tea: You can use ginger tea to relieve sore throat. It actually has shown its effectiveness for many people. To make ginger tea, take a small teaspoon of ginger roots after peel. Then put the ginger in a cup of warm water, put it in water with a small teaspoon of tea and left it soaking in water for 15 minutes, and then take it up immediately before it became cold.


Slipery Elm:

Slipery elm is an herb made up of a substance known as mucilage and it has been used for hundreds of years to treat cough and cold. It has a very strong ability to soothe all the mucous membranes of the body. And glue in the inner bark of the tree has the ability to expand when exposed to liquid as is the case in the throat or breathing passages. This has very calming effect.

The half a teaspoon of the inner barks of the slippery elm and adds it to two cups of water and soaks it for a few minutes. Then filtered and sweetens, and taking it slowly because it is still warm.
