What really is gout? Gout is basically when you have a large build up of uric acid and is also referred to as metabolic arthritis. The acid basically seeps into your cartilage around your bones and eventually can get right into your blood stream to cause inflammatory reactions.

There are four stages of the disease. You’re not likely to feel anything in the first stage, as uric acid is just building up. In the second stage, significant deposits of uric acid have accumulated in the joint spaces, causing intense pain and swelling. Acute gout usually occurs at night, and may last up to ten days before subsiding, even without treatment. Over time the attacks will last longer and intervals of occurrence will be shorter. Attacks can also be triggered by stress, illness, alcohol or drugs.

The third stage is benign: it is the interval between acute bouts of gout. You will have normal joint functions at this stage. The most disabling stage is chronic gout the fourth stage. This may develop over long periods, say 10 years; by that time, there may already be permanent damage to the joints and even the kidneys. If you get proper treatment, you will not reach this stage.

The high uric acid levels that cause gout will affect your body in other ways. Uric acid crystals may be deposited and appear as lumps under the skin around the joints or at the edge of your ear. In a more undesirable way, the crystals can accumulate in your kidneys to form kidney stones

Cherries: Eating cherries can help clear up your gout because they are high in Vitamin C which gets rid of the acid deposits. If you do not want to eat them you can substitute that with drinking one 8 ounce glass of cherry juice each day.

Apple: Gout patients also claim that eating an apple each day can also reduce your symptoms.

Water or Fluids: Drink 6 to 8 ounces of water or fluids a day to help reduce the amount of crystal deposits in your stream and to dilute the uric acid concentration of urine.

Lemon Juice: Drink a glass of water with half a fresh squeezed lemon in it two to three times a day. You can drink these gout-fighting juices to help you replace body fluids after your daily exercise regimen or with your meals and snacks. They not only quench your thirst, they also help stop the pain of arthritis.

Safflower Tablets: Safflower tablets can be found at your local drug store and have proved to be very beneficial for gout symptoms.

Pineapple Juice: Drink a glass of pineapple juice, because it has good quantities of the enzyme, bromelain. Among its various benefits, bromelain is a catalyst that helps in the synthesis of protein. Incomplete protein synthesis contributes to arthritis. Bromelain helps break down plaque and fatty deposits that clog blood vessels that worsen the gout condition.

Protein: If possible, target to have protein comprising less than half of your diet to achieve more balance. Protein is a necessary element in your body, but taking more than what’s necessary will upset your body’s nutrient balance.
