Home Remedies for Dandruff

If you notice shinny silver flakes falling from the scalp on your eyebrows, shoulders and clothes especially when you comb or scratch your hair you are suffering from dandruff.

These silver flakes at times forms lumps on the scalp. The itching caused due to dandruff can some time lead to reddening of the scalp.

The skin of scalp sheds dead cells to regenerate new ones which generally takes about three to four weeks.

Dandruff is the condition where the skin sheds dead cells at an abnormally higher rate this leads to a collection of white to yellowish white flakes on the scalp.

What causes abnormal shedding of the skin is a minor infection of the scalp caused by an overabundance of a fungus called P oval also known as malassezia.

Stress, harsh shampoos, so much cold or hot weather, fatigue and certain artifical hair-care products all of these contribute to dandruff.

The risk of dandruff increases due to an incorrect diet, constipation, energy loss due to illness or infections.

Dandruff and itchiness is basically our immune system reacting to the infection.

Let us look at some of the home remedies that inhibit the growth of this fungus and restore the normal pH balance of the scalp.

Home Remedies for Dandruff

List of Home Remedies for Dandruff:

1. Coconut Oil and Camphor:

How to:

  • Take about 4 tablespoons of coconut oil in a frying pan.
  • While it’s heating add a piece of camphor.
  • Mix them well.
  • Let the oil cool down till it becomes lukewarm.
  • Massage on scalp with this oil.
  • Leave it as it is overnight.

2. Fenugreek Seeds:

How to:

1. Take two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds.
2. Soak it in water over night.
3. Pass this mixture through a sieve and collect the seeds.
5. Crush the seeds to make paste.
6. Apply this on your scalp.
7. Massage thoroughly.
8. Wash it off with soap-nut water.

3. Egg Whites and Lemon Juice

How to:
1. Take two egg whites.
2. Add four tablespoons of lemon juice it.
3. Mix them well.
4. Apply this mixture on your scalp.
5. Massage gently for about half hour.

4. Margosa or Neem Leaves:

How to:

  • Take handful of margosa leaves.
  • Crush them to make a fine paste.
  • Add it toward half a liter of water.
  • Mix them well.
  • Wash your hair with this water first then with use plain water.

5. Margosa Leaves Home Remedy: The antiseptic and antibacterial properties of margosa help to treat dandruff by stopping the growth of fungus that causes dandruff. Make sure to keep her scalp clean and oil your hair every alternate day and wash it off well with a shampoo. 

How to:

  • Take about four cups of water in a vessel.
  • Add a handful of fresh margosa leaves to this.
  • Boil this for about 10 minutes.
  • Once its cools down.
  • Strain and rinse your hair with this mixture.
  • Use this remedy twice or thrice a week.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar Home Remedy: The apple cider vinegar restores the pH balance of the scalp thereby inhibiting the growth of yeast like fungus that causes dandruff. Elements such as calcium magnesium and potassium present in apple cider vinegar also contribute to healthy scalp.

How to:

  • Take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.
  • Add an equal amount of water to this.
  • Add about 15 to 20 drops of tea tree essential oil.
  • Mix them well.
  • Apply this mixture on your scalp and massage it gently.
  • Rinse your hair after 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Do this two to three times a week.
