Home Remedies for Bed Sores (Pressure Ulcer)

Bed sores are very common among bed ridden people who have conditions like paralysis, handicap, or old age which forces them to stay put on their beds.

Parts like the buttocks, heels, lower back, hip bone area, spine, ankles, knees, head and shoulders are under constant pressure and thus are the most affected by bed sores.

Bed sores can be divided by two stages:

Stage 1: The first stage involves formation of blue, purple or dark patches on the body parts which are under pressure.

Stage 2: In the second stage ulcers and open wounds appear on the skin.

Causes: As our loved ones age, their skin becomes thin and begins to lack the elasticity of those younger in age. When this happens, they become more and more susceptible to skin damage and infection.

The lack of a nutritious diet is a common problem among older people and because of this, their immune systems become less capable of fighting off infection and their skin becomes prone to damage.

But do not worry there are some effective home remedies to treat this condition.

What are the complications of bed sores?

Complications can develop when bed sores do not heal properly. Infection may develop in the skin (cellulitis), in deeper tissues and muscle, and in the bone (osteomyelitis).

Blood can also become infected (sepsis), as can the lining of the heart (endocarditis) and the fluid that surrounds the brain and spine (meningitis). Pain and inflammation of a joint (septic arthritis) may also develop as a result of severe pressure sores near joints.

How to avoid bed sores:

• Care should be taken to avoid constant pressure on any part of the body.

• Change positions and encourage movement to reduce the constant pressure on their skin. Make sure you are aware of the proper methods for moving a person under your care so that you avoid twisting or additionally damaging skin layers.

• Pay close attention to how your loved one is positioned so that their body weight is evenly distributed over the entire available surface of their bed or chair.

• Use devices specially designed to relieve to pressure on the skin.

• Always place padding on any exposed metal parts of a wheelchair to help reduce pressure and the friction against the skin.

• Be sure to provide a nutritious diet including plenty of protein for those who may be susceptible to bed sores or pressure ulcers.

• Always keep the skin clean and never allow body fluids or feces to remain in contact with the skin.

• Make sure the patient sleeps on a soft mattress.

• Use moisturizing lotion lotions to help the skin retain fluid and to prevent it from drying out. Certain lotions can be considered barrier lotions and contain ingredients that act as a preventative layer to protect the skin from excess moisture or chafing.

List of Home Remedies for Bed Sores:

1. Beetroots and Honey Home Remedy:

  • Take three crushed beetroots.
  • Place it on a sieve.
  • Extract its juice.
  • Add about two tablespoon honey.
  • Mix them well.
  • Apply this mixture 2-3 times a day using cotton.
  • Tie a bandage on it for stains.

2. Honey and Sugar Home Remedy:

  • Take two tablespoon of honey.
  • Add two tablespoon of sugar.
  • Mix them well.
  • Place this in another bowl of hot water.
  • Heat it till it becomes lukewarm.
  • Apply this solution on the bed sores to facilitate healing.

3. Aloe Vera Home Remedy:

  • Apply Aloe Vera gel on the bed sores.
  • Leave it as it is for couple of hours.
  • To make Aloe Vera gel at home.
  • Take one Aloe Vera leaf.
  • Peel of the skin.
  • Extract its gel.
  • Wipe it off with the clean cloth.
  • Repeat this 2 to 3 times a day.
