Smoking Risk: How Smoking Damages Your Appearance

There might not exist nay fountain of youth, but a sure shot way of adding years to your look does exit – smoking. The changes that your teeth, hair and skin undergo due to smoking make you look older. Also, it affects everything from bones to fertility, lungs etc.

Bags under eyes and crow’s feet:

Under-the-eyes bags are common for smokers. This is one of the many signs that indicate how smoking is damaging your appearance. Everyone gets wrinkles on the outside of the eyes eventually, but these wrinkles develop either and go deeper among smokers.

Dark colored spots that develop on hands and face due to ageing or too much exposure to sun are called age spots. Smokers are more prone to these.

Skin is chronically deprived of nutrients and oxygen due to smoking. This makes some smokes look pale, also develops uneven skin tone in others. In young non-smokers uneven skin tone is not usually seen, whereas in smokers even as they are young these changes start showing.

Sagging skin:

The trigger for the damage done to elastin and collagen are the 4000 and more chemicals that are present in tobacco smoke. Skin’s elasticity and strength depend on these fibers (elastin and collagen) which are badly affected by second hand smoke as well. This results in deep wrinkles and skin that sags.


Psoriasis is a chronic condition that most often causes thick, scaly patches on the skin – usually on the knees, elbows, scalp, hands, feet or back. The patches may be white, red or silver. Recent studies smokers have a greater risk of developing psoriasis.

Damaged gums and teeth:

Long term smoking makes one’s teeth yellow; also makes them more susceptible to gum disease, oral hygiene problems and foul breath. Smokers are at double the risk of losing teeth when compared to non-smokers.

Sagging breasts and arms:

Along with ruining the look of your face, smoking affects your body figure as well such as sagging breasts and arms. Parts that are generally firm, like inner arms and breast, begin to drop because the elasticity of the skin is lost due to smoking.

Hair fall:

Both men and women tend to develop thinner hair as they age and smoking can accelerate this process. Some studies even suggest people who smoke are more likely to have hair fall. Researchers have identified smoking as a clear risk factor for male-pattern baldness in Asian men.

Stained fingers:

Think your hand looks sexy with a cigarette perched between your fingers? In you’ve been smoking for awhile, take a good look at your fingernails and the skin of your hands. Tobacco can actually stain the skin and nails, as well as the teeth. The good news is these stains tend to fade when you quit smoking.

How quitting improves your looks:

Quitting smoking can improve your appearance. As blood flow gets better, you skin receives more oxygen and nutrients. This can help you develop a healthier complexion. If you stay tobacco-free, the stains on your fingers and nails will disappear. You may even notice you teeth getting whiter.
