What is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and it’s Symptoms?

A person with Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD may experience intense bouts of anger, depression and anxiety 2% of American adults mostly women suffer from this condition characterized by impulsive actions, unstable moods and chaotic relationship. This distortion in thinking and sense of self can lead a frequent change in long term goals, career plan, jobs, friendships, general identity and values. These may be associated with episode of impulsive aggression, self injury, alcohol abuse.

Sometimes people with BPD view themselves is fundamentally bad or unworthy they may feel unfairly misunderstood or mistreated, bored, empty and have little idea who they are. Such symptoms are most acute when people with BPD feel isolated and lacking in social support and may result in frantic efforts to avoid being alone.

Additionally BPD is characterized by an insecure sense of self which means the people with disorder frequently change jobs, goals, friendships and even more extreme cases general identity.  Similarly BPD sufferers often have turbulent and highly unstable parents in their inter-personal relationships.

While they can develop intense but only attachments their attitudes towards family, friends and loved ones may suddenly shift from idealization characterized by great admiration to devaluation which is expressed is intense anger and dislike. Study shows that most people with BPD report a history of abuse, separation or neglect as a child.

Other research suggests the people with BPD and their families may be more at risk to developing the mental illness. Finally there are studies that show the people with BPD have abnormalities in areas of the brain that control aggression and impulsivity. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a very serious matter. The term borderline has been thrown around a lot lately and it is important to always see a trained and licensed therapist who specializes in BPD before trying to self diagnosing or diagnosing other friends you know with this troublesome malady.

A lady with borderline personality disorder can typically have the vast majority of her relationships be chaotic and unstable. A common theme in the lives of ladies with this illness is low self-esteem, frequent outbursts of anger and frustration, and impulsive behavior. Common signs of this mental illness in women include the fear of being left alone or abandoned by those they love or in relationships. This fear of abandonment is a common theme in their life even when the abandonment is not a real threat or even a possibility. Loved ones can tell a lady with this disorder that they love them and will not leave them but the person suffering from BPD still fixates on the perceived abandonment.

Another sign of borderline personality disorder in ladies is that they tend to become dependent on others, often time this dependency combined with the fear of abandonment leads ladies to have erratic behavior and often times abandoning or ending relationships before there is a possibility for themselves to be abandoned.

Typically those who are diagnosed with this type of mental illness have at least five of the following signs of borderline personality disorder.

1 # She makes frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.

2 # Women with this disorder have a pattern of difficult relationships with the common theme of these relationships being erratic emotional extremes of either intense love or admiration or hatred of the person in the relationship.

3 # Ladies with BPD often have an unstable self-image and are unsure of their own identities.

4 # Women with BPD have a tendency to act impulsively in ways that are self-damaging; these include spending sprees, sex with many partners, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, reckless driving and binge eating.

5 # Women diagnosed with difficult malady often have long-term feelings of emptiness and depression.

6 # They often have frequent emotional outbursts and intense mood swings that can go from feeling depressed here to bowl and anxious to happy and euphoric in a very short matter of time. Sometimes these outbursts only last a few hours at a time, but others can go on for days.

7 # BPD trait seven is one to really watch out for women with borderline personality disorder often have suicidal thoughts or make threats of committing suicide to the people in their lives.

8 # Ladies with BPD often have inappropriate and extremely fierce anger and rage and have problems controlling their anger, rage and violence.

It’s impossible to prevent these causes of Borderline Personality Disorder but treatment for the condition is constantly evolving. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for example is a type of individual or group therapy that was created specifically to treat BPD in extreme cases a person with BPD may need to spend time in a psychiatric hospital. Well Borderline Personality Disorder is distressing with proper care sufferers can go on to lead normal healthy life.
